Inspired by Aisha Zeijpveld

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to go to one of the days at the Offset London conference. I had been to one of the Offset conferences in Dublin quite a few years ago and was excited that they were putting something on in London.

There were lots of inspiring talks from different creatives throughout the day but I think the major highlights for me were Erik Kessels and Seb Lester. Someone new to me who's work really blew me away though (I have kept thinking about it since) was Aisha Zeijpveld

She is an Amsterdam based photographer and you might not necessarily know it from looking at her photographs but there is so much work that goes into them. I have lots of friends who are photographers and I know that it's not a case of just pointing and shooting - there is lots of planning, research, styling and technical skill that goes into each shot. But Aisha's work just took things to a whole different level. The way she works seems very experimental and sometimes looking at the images you just can't know all the different layers and processes that she has gone through to get the final outcome.

I think this is why her talk really stood out to me because it was really fun to see the behind the scenes of how she works. The image below for example hasn't been photoshops. Portraits were taken and then parts of the image where cut away and light shined through to get the halo effect.

Again, you might think that the below was photoshopped but actually it was a case of genuinely throwing things at this guys face to get the perfect shot. I think what is quite exciting (and risky I guess) is that you don't always know how it is going to turn out - or how long it will take to get something that works and is just right.

Quite a lot of her work involves various stages of photography. A photograph might be taken and then printed, ripped and manipulated and then photographed again. It gives them such a deep and beautiful quality that I think would get lost in photoshop. I think the image below is really beautiful and was for an editorial piece to illustrate back pain.

I would really recommend checking out Aisha's website to see more of her beautiful work. There is such a distinct style and beautiful quality to her images. It is always amazing to discovered an artist and to be inspired and mesmerised by their work.

I hope you all have an inspired Thursday!

a collection of sunsets

So not only am I trying to de-clutter and sort out all my physical possessions but I also need to tackle my digital possessions. This is something I need to get on top of pronto or it is going to get even more overwhelming and out of control! In particular I need to come up with a good way of organising and storing my images (if anyone has any amazing systems they would like to share I am all ears!) Anyway enough of that, while going through lots of old images I discovered that I had accumulated quite a little collection of sunset images over the years (I think some of these are over 10 years old!). I really do love a good sunset. I think it is one of the most beautiful things in the world and the colours just blow me away. God seriously is an artist and I love that he creates things like sunsets that are so beautiful they take our breath away.

This last photo was me and a friend - lying on the top of a mountain (hmm maybe hill) that we had climbed and we just lay in the grass and watched the sunset over us. It was pretty amazing.

It is often frustrating photographing sunsets because they never come out as good as in real life (and some times I think its better to not even bother trying and just enjoy them - not everything has to be photographed right?).

Anyway I hope you enjoyed this little bit of sunset inspiration for a Friday and have lovely weekends planned.

Today I am going to be selling my wares (from 10-5) at The Green Room Cafe in Stoke Newington. If that is your hood stop by and come and say hey! I have really enjoying selling my stuff at markets and meeting customers and making new friends.

My insta faves: teresacfreitas

Normally for these insta faves I do a round up of 8 different Instagram accounts to follow but today I decided to feature just one, as her account is so incredibly beautiful. Introducing teresacfreitas - most of the images in her feed are like works of art in their own right and not something that she has snapped while she is out and about (although there are a few of those two) - and I really enjoy the glimpse into how her creative mind works. After a bit of internet stalking I discovered that Teresa is from Portugal and is a photographer (duh! Well obviously!).

There are lots of surreal images in her feed and her work, she is inspired by the sea and you can see that in a lot of her photographs.

I really do think that Instagram is my favourite form of social media, and although every now and then the green eyed monster rears its ugly head meaning occasionally I have to unfollow someone for my own sanity, most of the time I discover the most wonderfully creative people that inspire me in all sorts of ways.

My insta faves (part 4)

I have done a few of these posts now and I really enjoy putting them together and going through my Instagram feed, falling in love again and getting inspired by some of the people I follow. Inspired by Line T Klein

For some reasons I feel like I have been doing a lot more styling recently when it comes to photography for my blog and also for some other clients. It is something that is very tricky and takes a lot of skill but makes such a huge difference, and when it is done well you often don't notice.

I recently stumbled across the work of Line T Klein, her photographs are just stunning and her styling is top notch. She is a Copenhagen based editorial photographer. She describes her style as 'a tangible, sensual take on Scandinavian cool'.

I really love the textures and colours used in some of these shots. In the past I don't think I realised how much of a skill styling is. There is so much to think about, from the colours, the lighting, the composition, layers and textures. I hope you enjoyed checking our Line T Klein's work. I am off to practice my photography and set up some little styled shots in my home studio!

Hope you are all having a lovely Wednesday!

My insta faves

One of my main aims this year has been to be more consistent with blogging and instagram, and so far it is going pretty well. There are still a lot of areas that I need to work on and improve but things are going in a direction that I am happy with and excited about and I am just really enjoying myself. I am loving this space more than ever and am also really coming to love the instagram community that I am part of.

Instagram is such a mine of inspiration and I have started following some amazing people recently with beautiful accounts and so I thought I would share some of my favourites so you can get inspired at the start of the week.

@ryntor - beautiful scenic shots mixed with cute illustrations. It is a collaboration between Illustrator Ryn Frank and Photographer Tor Harrison.

Print Swap

I follow lots of blogs by various creatives...illustrators, designers, photographers etc, and every now and then someone will post some work that make me think 'wow - I really want that on my wall'.  A little while ago I bought a print, of a collage by Laura, after seeing it on her blog and falling in love with it.

Anyway, I have been a follower of Rhianne's lovely blog for a while now and a little while before Christmas she did a post and the photographs were just stunning...I am not really sure what it was (maybe the colours, the delicacy) but I knew that I wanted that third image on my wall somewhere.

I got in touch with Rhianne and she said she would be happy to sort out getting a print done - the same day I posted a picture on Instagram of the prints that I had screen printed at Print Club London and Rhianne messaged me saying she loved it and how about doing a print swap!

IMG_4196.JPG

What a great idea right?! I love having work by all different people over my walls and in particular work by creative people I have made friends with online or offline.

Anyway Rhianne's photograph is framed and on my wall now and it makes me so happy.

If any other creative types are ever interested in a print swap with me, I would love to hear from you. It is such a lovely idea! (I actually have 2 of the 'let's be adventurers prints left)

Inspired by Jordan Sullivan

This week I stumbled across (on Fubiz) the work of Jordan Sullivan and I fell in love with this series called 'Death Valley' - seriously! imagine having a whole series of these on your wall. I love the subtle colours, the compositions of the photographs and the simplicity of them. There is something seriously striking and dream like about these images. Especially when you see them all as a set. Sullivan has a really dreamy style to his photography and you can see more of his work here. (Be warned if you are looking at this at work - there are quite a lot of images of naked ladies!)

a little wandering in the Gower

Quite a few months ago now (yeah yeah I am way behind on posting loads of stuff!) we took a little a trip to the Gower in Wales with some wonderful friends and it was pretty awesome. The weather wasn't amazing but we still managed to get out, sit on the beach and get burnt. Here are a couple of pics. Not all of these pics were taken by me...some were taken by Steve.  The Gower area on the south coast of Wales is seriously beautiful and a place that I really want to explore more. I think in the past I have always had major wanderlust for exploring foreign climbs but I think I am coming around to the idea that holidays in the UK are pretty cool too, I have quite a long list of places that I would like to explore.

Talking of foreign adventures though - I am looking forward to sharing some pics from Colombia soon too over the coming weeks - and next month we head to Venice. Am feeling super blessed that we have got to do go on some awesome trips since we got married. I really do love adventures with that guy.

Monday moodboard

So - I sort of fell off the blogging bandwagon this last month. I have not been very well..I went away and in the mix of life and just trying to get better the blog fell by the wayside. I have kind of missed it but at the same time it was kind of nice to have a break too. I thought to kick start myself back into it I would do a little mood board for some Monday inspiration. I am going on holiday in a couple of weeks so there is lots to cram in before we go...but hopefully I will be able to resume slightly more regular posting now! I decided to go black and white again for this mood board...because I don't know why but my b&w pinterest board has been inspiring me so much recently.

I tried to find all the credits, but you know what it's like with Pinterest...it's not always easy to find. Here's what I found. (clockwise from top left) 1/2/3/4/5/6/7

In other news I wish I was Audrey Tatou. also that Tree pattern is wall paper - that would look amazing.

Happy Monday all.

Bolivia - 10 years later
CNV00021
CNV00021

About 10 years ago I spent 4 months in Bolivia and totally fell in love with the country. I have been dreaming recently about going back. I have been having a bit of  a sort out of old photos recently and stumbled upon these from my trip. 10 years on and I thought I would share them. They are making me even more desperate to get back to this beautiful place. I would love to be able to take NM to some of the places that I visited. I met some incredible people while I was there who I have sadly lost touch with. At the time when I was travelling I didn't have a digital camera (that is shocking to me now...I can't imagine life without a camera constantly in my pocket) - and so I used a good old pretty cheap film camera. (I wanted something that I wouldn't mind if I lost or broke and would be easy to replace) - and looking at these photos makes me think I miss shooting with film a bit. The excitement of getting the pictures developed, it was all a bit unknown...what would come back? I also really love the look of them. There is something so beautifully grainy and imperfect about these shots. I hope you enjoy a little glimpse into my world of ten years ago. (I might have to do another post as these are a small portion of the images)

Blog love

My list of blogs that I follow has been growing quite a bit recently. One of my favourite things is finding a new blog and then spending a ages going through all the old posts and getting totally inspired. I think I like seeing people's journey and just appreciating their style and asthetic choices. I have also been enjoying blogging more recently. There is still a lot more I would love to be able to do in this space if I had a little bit more time...but its my space and I am enjoying hanging out here. I thought for a bit of inspiration I would share some of the blogs I have been loving recently. sorry if these are all old news and you already follow them all! 1. Bless the Weather

I got my camera out on a grey drizzly sunday a few weekends ago and took some pics around Battersea park. (oh yeah and we stumbled upon a little fun fair!) Getting my camera out and having a play was long overdue and it was clear how rusty I have got. These are just a few of the shots that I didn't hate. I am determined to keep practicing. I am also currently dreaming about owning this camera. but ALOT of saving needs to happen first! Anyone need a logo or any design doing and willing to pay the big bucks? no seriously...I am very reasonable :)

I used to get to swim in river and lakes so much when I was a kid and I loved it...doesn't happen so much now in London). I am off to Ben's Canteen for dinner tonight to celebrate NM's birthday. It is my new favourite place to hang out. Hope you all have a lovely weekend. x

My Year // March
march01
march01

So March is done. I have managed to keep up with my instagram challenge and although sometimes I post them a day late I have posted one for every day of the month. The weather is getting milder and spring is arriving and life in the city feels good. (Apart from some rather grim smog covering it today)

These are a selection from some of my March postings. If you want to follow along you can check it out here. I still have mixed feelings about limiting myself to black and white...but mostly I like the challenge - and am starting to think about what compositions and sorts of shots look best in black and white. If you want to see my life in colour you can check out my VSCO grid where I will be posting some bits and pieces. (Like this flower that just could not be posted black and white)

I ended the month meeting up with two friends I had made on instagram which was awesome. It was like I had known them forever and we already had so much in common. I know people have been going on about it for ages but I am starting to really see and appreciate what an amazing community can be found on instagram.

Tiny Tattoos
austin_trott
austin_trott

Hmm I am not really a tattoo person. I think Its just something I couldn't commit too. I worry that I would decide on something and then a year later my tastes and style would change and I wouldn't like it anymore. I have always loved the idea of having a really tiny tattoo on my wrist though, and so when I saw the work of Austin Tott featured on Designboom I was like 'ooooooooh...nice'. I love this series of photographs that he has done. I really like how the tattoos are held up in different related landscapes. It makes for a really fun and appealing series. I think my favourite in a tattoo sense is the little envelope. Anyway there won't be any tattoo's for me...but I am happy to admire other people's! You should check out more of Austin's work here...and if you are on instagram his feed is beautiful. I would recommend following along.

My Year // February
feb
feb

OOh I am way behind with posting some pics of February. These are all part of my challenge to post an image to instagram every day for this year (and I am limiting myself to black and white) - I didn't really like how they looked when I posted all of them in January because they were just so small....so I have decided to just pick out a few of my favourites in february. These are just a few of the little things that were going on in the world around me. and now we are already nearly half way through march! You can follow along with my challenge on instagram.

Josef Hoflehner
Josef01
Josef01

After my raptures about all things black and white on Monday I stumbled across the work of photograher Josef Hoflehner. They are absolutely stunning and so striking. I really love his collection of photographs of India and South America, but there is so much incredible work on his website. Trust me take some time to have a look through and get inspired. It has made my feet very itchy for travel now. (The Taj Mahal image below has seriously increased my desire to go to India!)

What I notice from these photographs (and from hours spent in the dark room and photographing puddles for my Art A-level) is how important contrast is in black and white photography. You need to have dark rich blacks and then also bright whites. Will have to try and remember this when I am looking out for things to photograph for my daily instagram challenge.
